Assilah is a small fishing village with one of the best preserved Medinas of Morroco.

It is located on the Atlantic coast of northern Morroco, 40 Km from Tangier and only 30 Km from the airport. Just outside the Medina there is a large supervised parking area. Cars are forbidden inside the medina.

The old walled town was built by the Portuguese in the XV century and the exotic blend of Islamic and former European culture can still be seen in its streets. The old medina is very hospitable, safe and the narrow streets are packed with carpet shops and another traditional artisan shops.

In summer, the white houses of the medina are painted by local artists in the famous art festival of Assilah. A rowdy market takes place every Thursday just in front of the Medina. Along the coast there are a lot of unspoilt beaches where you can bath or walk, far from city life.

A day-trip to the nearby Riif mountains and the old city of Chechaouen is highly recommended.
